Nomadic Space 2

Project type

Art

Nomadic Space 2 evolved as other communities became interested in the portable spaces. As a result, this second series was designed to not be linked to any specific religion. Created as a kit of parts, the size of the aluminum frame is variable, and the flexibility of the flat aluminum extrusions suspended within the frame allows its occupants to create a variety of forms with interlocking polyester resin and fiberglass panels. The form is chosen based on the symbolic or cultural meaning that the community who uses it associates with an architectural form: the semicircular dome or apse of a church, the flat dome of a mosque, or the curvilinear roof a Buddhist temple. Expandable to 5 meters in height, Nomadic Space 2 can be disassembled and boxed so tightly that it will fit into the trunk of small automobile.

For nighttime use, the panels can capture the light projected onto them through the fiberglass embedded in the transparent resin. The choice of projected image allows for further cultural precision, such as images of buildings, iconography, or tones of color. Through its changing forms, Nomadic Space 2 functions as a polymorphous symbolic system free of any fixed connection to a particular culture or identity. As a result, these structures are capable of functioning as a surrogate space for the varied and unpredictable needs of its users, lending themselves to a larger number of uses than Nomadic Space 1.
