Installations

Aterliers Michael Herrman is involved in the creation of ephemeral works of architecture that use experimental materials combined with audio-visual technologies. These temporary installations that meld art and architecture have been installed in cities across Europe as part of important expositions that challenge traditional experience of urban spaces and concepts of place.

The Observatory reveals the stark contrast between the representation of cities and their actual form. It engages the media’s increasing effect on the perception and form of cities by allowing visitors to explore a virtual version of the city they are in.

Made of interchangeable aluminum elements of equal length and covered with a translucent high-strength polyurethane fabric, the form of Nomadic Space 1 is derived from the vertical orientation of the cruciform church plan. Its movable surfaces allow for size and form adaptability according to a particular community’s needs.

Created as a kit of parts, the size of the aluminum frame is variable, and the flexibility of the flat aluminum extrusions suspended within the frame allows its occupants to create a variety of forms with interlocking polyester resin and fiberglass panels. The form is chosen based on the symbolic or cultural meaning that the community who uses it associates with an architectural form.
